What is People, Place, and Practice?
People, Place, and Practice is a professional development initiative designed for educators, healthcare providers, social workers, and other care-centered professionals. Through workshops and certificate programs, we equip participants with tools in spatial empathy, healing-centered design, and systems accountability to help them create more equitable environments.

Who is this program for?
This program is ideal for professionals who serve others—teachers, nurses, social workers, nonprofit staff, community planners, and beyond—especially those who want to better understand how systems and spaces impact the lives of the people they care for.

Do I need a background in urban planning or design to join?
Not at all. While we explore concepts like spatial thinking and systems design, the content is accessible to anyone committed to equity and place-based work. We break things down clearly and use real-world examples from education, healthcare, and community services.

What will I gain from participating?
You’ll walk away with practical frameworks, a certificate to boost your professional credentials, new strategies to apply in your work, and a community of peers who are also committed to equity and systems change.

Is this just theory, or will I learn practical skills?
You’ll get both. The program is rooted in reflection and real-world application. You’ll leave with tools you can start using right away—whether that’s mapping inequities, improving how your organization gathers community input, or designing more healing-centered environments.

How much time will I need to commit?
Each certificate track includes a set number of classes (typically 6 sessions), along with optional graded reflection assignments. Most participants spend 2–3 hours per week during the program. You'll receive all the information up front so you can plan around your schedule.

Is there a cost to participate?
Yes, there is a program fee, which varies depending on the track or bundle you choose. However, we offer sliding scale options and limited scholarships to ensure access for those working in under-resourced settings. We also encourage participants to use professional development or training budgets if available.

Can I take part if I’m outside the U.S.?
Yes! Our virtual sessions are open to international participants. While some of our case studies focus on U.S.-based systems, the core concepts—equity, care, and place—are globally relevant.

How do I enroll or stay updated?
You can sign up here to join our interest group or register directly for an upcoming program. If you’re not ready yet, sign up for our newsletter to receive updates, resources, and upcoming session announcements.
